THE COLLECTION

The tola is a traditional unit of mass derived from the Sanskrit root tol.  In centuries past, it was a standard measure for gold and silver bullion.  Still a popular denomination in certain gold markets around the world, the tola embodies the resilience of the ancient in ever-changing times.  Tola Jewelry was founded in celebration of this rich cultural and tactile tradition.  A fine jewelry line infusing modern sculptural shapes with a subtle old world aesthetic, the collection offers handcrafted pieces that are at once contemporary yet enduring.

THE DESIGNER

Of  South Asian heritage and raised in Appalachia, Shoma Lahiry spent her childhood immersed in the vibrant landscapes of these varied terrains.  Formally trained as an architect, she studied various jewelry making techniques as a creative outlet in New York before launching Tola Jewelry in 2014.  Inspired by an upbringing rich in diverse textures and geometries, her designs explore the intersection of dual origins - interweaving the space that lies between East and West, traditional and modern, old and new.

THE PROCESS

In a continuing exploration of past and present fabrication methods, Tola Jewelry combines the age-old art of lost wax casting and traditional metalsmithing practices with current technologies in three-dimensional digital fabrication to create our work.  Guided by a commitment to sustainability and detailed craftsmanship, all jewelry is made in the United States using responsibly sourced precious metals and stones.
